About CharLimits
CharLimits is an independent tool built for people who publish for a living: social managers, paid media buyers, marketplace sellers and developers who need to know whether a string will fit before they hit publish.
Every counter on the site runs entirely in your browser. There is no account, no upload and no server side processing of the text you paste.
Why we built it
Most character counters report the length of a string. That is not the number platforms use. X charges a flat 23 characters for any link, most emoji cost two characters, Bluesky counts grapheme clusters and SMS falls back to a 70 character encoding the moment an emoji appears.
Those differences are the reason a post that looks fine in a text editor gets rejected at publish time. CharLimits reproduces the platform rule rather than the raw string length.
Where the limits come from
Limits are taken from each platform published documentation and verified against live accounts. Each page carries a last reviewed date so you can judge how current the numbers are.
Platforms change limits without notice. Treat every number here as guidance and confirm inside the app before running a time sensitive campaign.
How the site is funded
CharLimits is free. The site is funded by display advertising, and some pages contain partner links to third party tools. Partner links never change the counts or the recommendations on this site.
Advertising partners may set cookies to measure and serve ads. You can read the detail in our privacy policy.
Support the project
CharLimits is built and maintained by an independent developer. If the site saves you time, a small tip helps keep it ad-free and the counters accurate. Support us on Ko-fi
Accessibility and performance
The site is a static build with no framework, no tracking redirects and no render blocking third party requests. It is designed to load fast on mobile data and to stay usable once offline.
- Semantic HTML with a single H1 per page and labelled landmarks
- Keyboard navigable controls with visible focus states
- Respects prefers-color-scheme and reduced motion preferences
