Mastodon ships a 500 character post limit by default, but every instance sets its own. Some servers stay at 500 while others raise it well past that, so the number you need depends on where your account lives.

This counter measures Unicode characters the way Mastodon does, so most emoji cost a single character and only composite sequences such as flags or skin tone combinations cost more.
